Preparing for Your Electrical Walkthrough: What to Think About Beforehand

Your electrical walkthrough is one of the most important stages in your build or renovation. It’s where you get to fine-tune how your home will work — not just how it looks. This stage brings all the planning to life, and it’s much easier (and cheaper!) to make adjustments before than once the walls are lined and painted. Here are some practical things to think about before your walkthrough with your builder or Amp’t team:

TV Placement and Wiring

Decide where your TVs will be positioned so power, data, and cabling can be hidden neatly within the wall.

  • Think about whether the TV will be wall-mounted or on a unit.

  • Consider adding direct data points for stronger streaming and smart TV connections instead of relying on Wi-Fi alone.

  • If you plan on having soundbars or home theatre systems, note where these will sit — you may need extra power or AV cabling.

USB Chargers and Smart Switches

USB outlets are a small luxury that make a big difference in day-to-day living.

  • Add them beside beds, in the kitchen island, or at charging zones where devices naturally gather.

  • For families or tech-heavy homes, a dedicated charging drawer or nook can help keep benches tidy.

  • Smart switches or combination outlets (USB-A and USB-C) give flexibility for the future.

Kitchen and Laundry Power Points

Think beyond the basics — where will you plug in appliances daily?

  • Kitchen islands: include power for mixers, laptops, or extra lighting.

  • Hidden appliances: add outlets for under-bench microwaves, wine fridges, or integrated bins.

  • Laundry: plan for how you’ll configure the space — stacked or side-by-side appliances — as this changes where power, water, and venting go.

4. Bathroom Details

Bathrooms are all about function and comfort.

  • Mirrors: decide if you’d like LED mirrors with integrated lighting or standard mirrors with overhead lights.

  • Heated towel rails: think about size, placement, and how many you’ll need — they’re energy efficient and add warmth and luxury.

  • Include outlets discreetly for hairdryers or electric toothbrushes.

Exterior and Entry Lighting

Your home’s outdoor lighting isn’t just for aesthetics — it’s about safety and usability.

  • Add motion sensor lights for driveways and side paths.

  • Use wall lights or bollards to illuminate steps and entryways.

  • Consider wiring for future garden lighting or outdoor entertaining areas, even if you don’t plan to install them right away.

Think Ahead — Future-Proofing

Even if you’re not installing everything now, pre-wiring for EV chargers, home automation, or solar can save big costs down the track.

A good rule of thumb — Plan for the lifestyle you’ll have five years from now, not just the one you have today.

Final Thoughts

The electrical walkthrough is your chance to make sure your home supports the way you live. Take your time, ask questions, and visualise how you’ll use each space daily — cooking, relaxing, entertaining, and winding down.
